World Breastfeeding week
1 to 7 August .
World Breastfeeding Week is observed every year from 1 to 7 August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of infants around the world. It reminds of the innocent declaration signed in August 1990 by government policy makers, WHO, UNICEF and other organizations to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
This year, WHO is working with UNICEF and partners to promote the importance of family-friendly policies to enable breastfeeding and help parents nurture and bond with their children early in life. This includes paid maternity leave for a minimum of 18 weeks and paid paternity leave to encourage the shared responsibility of caring for their children on an equal basis. Parents also need access to a parent-friendly workplace to protect their ability to continue breastfeeding and to support their ability to return to work by using breastfeeding breaks; A safe, private and clean place to express and store breastmilk; And affordable childcare.
Breastfeeding promotes better health for mothers and children. Increasing breastfeeding to almost universal levels can save more than 800 000 lives every year, most of whom are children under 6 months of age. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease in mothers. It is estimated that breast cancer can cause up to 20 000 maternal deaths each year due to breast cancer.
WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding within one hour of birth until the child is 6 months old. Nutritious supplementary foods should be added until breast-fed for 2 years or more.
